Faunus was the god of the countryside, pastures and agriculture, as opposed to the god of the woods, Silvanus. It was also called "Luperco", as defender of the flocks and inhabitants of the countryside from the assaults of the wolves and wolf himself (Lupercus = lupus + hircus) . It is one of the oldest Italic divinities, as well as the instigator of Salii and Luperci, the two solidaritates dedicated to the initiatory cult of Mars. He had hunt and woo nymphs as pastimes. He loved playing the flute and was the bearer of sexual instincts. His appearance was human in form, but with goat legs and horns on his head. In rural communities, his feast (Faunàlia) occurred on December 5th and was celebrated between dances and processions. The composition of the work together with the chromatic varieties clearly refer to the Neapolitan painting of the first half of the 700s. Measurements: 100x85cm. We are at your disposal for further clarifications or photographic details Shipping throughout Italy, Europe and the rest of the world at very low prices with maximum security and traceability. The shipment will be privately agreed and will not be expensive. We wish you a good day. Borrelli Antiquity.
