Publisher: Poznań, Official Publishing House.

Year of publication: 1929.

Format: 16.5 cm.

Volume: 109, [7] pp., tables, ill.

Binding: Paperback.

The official guide to the General National Exhibition in Poznań, the famous “PeWuca.” The exhibition was organized to commemorate the tenth anniversary of regaining independence and lasted 138 days, from May 16 to September 30, 1929. Over 100 buildings were erected on approximately 65 hectares, and 1,427 exhibitors presented exclusively Polish products. The exhibition was visited by approximately 4.5 million people, including about 200,000 guests from abroad. It was the largest economic and organizational event of the Second Polish Republic. The opening took place on May 16 at 10 a.m. The exhibition anthem—with lyrics by Emil Zegadłowicz and music by Feliks Nowowiejski—was played, and President Ignacy Mościcki cut the white-and-red ribbon and released a white carrier pigeon; 2,000 such pigeons were released that day. The exhibition was initiated by Poznań Mayor Cyryl Ratajski, and Stanisław Wachowiak served as its general director. Roger Sławski was responsible for the architecture. Among other structures built for the exhibition were the “Polonia” hotel and the university buildings Collegium Heliodori and Collegium Anatomicum. The PeWuKa site is still occupied today by the Poznań International Fair. A pocket guide, featuring numerous illustrations and charts, led visitors through the pavilions and sections of the exhibition. Today, it documents the architecture and layout of the exhibition, most of which no longer exists.

Provenance: no ownership records or stamps.

This is the official guide to Poland’s largest interwar exhibition, in its original publisher’s cover. A must-have for collectors of Poznań memorabilia and PWK 1929 artifacts, researchers of the Second Polish Republic’s economy, and historians of modernist architecture.

The text block is intact, the pages are clean, and the illustrations and plates are preserved without damage. The paper publisher’s cover is in good condition—exhibition publications of this type, used on the exhibition grounds and treated as ephemera, rarely survived in such condition.
