A fine, small, Southern German tabernacle clock with hour strike - decorated with motifs from the copperplate engraving series "The Planets" by the German painter, draughtsman and copperplate engraver Georg Pencz (1500-1550) Dimensions 170 mm, circa 1620, Origin Deutschland Case: Brass, copper base, firegilt, engraved on all sides, 1 hammer/1 bell, short pendulum. Dial: Front - engraved chapter ring with Roman numerals "I-XII" and half hour division, above engraving "SO OFT EIN STUND FÜR ÜBER GAT KÜRTZER DANS MENSHEN LEBEN STAT" (The more often an hour passes, the shorter human life becomes) and year 1620, below engraving of Venus with hour glass and skull, iron hands. Reverse - control dial for hour striking mechanism with Arabic numerals, single iron hand, 2 winding arbors, engraving of a fruit garland. Movm.: Iron frame, brass going train, 2 x chain/fusee for going and striking train, verge escapement. The high square case with engraved walls rises from a square firegilt copper base. The case has a bell on top which is framed by a balustrade and decorated with obelisks. The two sides are ornamented with exquisite engraving with the motifs "Luna" and "Sol" from the copper engraving set "Die Planeten (the planets)" by German monogramist "I. B." Georg Pencz (also Jorg Benntz, Pentz, Bentz, Benz etc..) dating from 1528. He was born circa 1500 and died in 1550. Pencz was an important Mannerist painter and engraver. Together with the two Beham brothers he was part of the "Nuremberg Kleinmeister" (Little Masters) group. Case: very good, restaurations, rubbed. Dial: very good, slightly rubbed. Movm.: very good, capable of running, re-build, cleaning recommended.
