Another Chamberlain Worcester chocolate cup, cover and stand from the 'Horatia Service', circa 1802-03
Of tapering shape with two gilt loop handles and a twisted ring finial, richly-decorated with the 'Fine Old Japan' pattern no.240, with Imari panels reserving gold-ground medallions, three on each part, the circular panels painted with a Ducal coronet, a Viscount's coronet and the crest of the San Josef, the stand 13.6cm diam, the cup and cover 11.3cm high, the stand and cover both marked '240' in purple (3)
Provenance
Vice-Admiral Horatio, Lord Nelson
Emma, Lady Hamilton
With Stoner and Evans, King Street, London (paper label)

The Horatia Service was ordered from Chamberlain's in Worcester during Nelson's visit to the factory in August 1802. When the order was placed, these cups were listed as '6 Chocolates 2 handles covers & stands'. Four years later, when the final invoice was drawn up in 1806, they appear as '6 Chocolate Cups & stands Complete... no.240 £6-6s--'. In addition to this cost of one guinea for each cup and stand, a total of sixteen shillings and sixpence was charged for painting the nine individual crests and coronets.

The important 'Trickey Inventory' of Lady Hamilton's possessions removed from Merton, drawn up circa 1813 as surety for a loan, includes a full description of the 'Horatia Set'. This incorrectly lists the chocolate cups as '6 Wine Cups, Covers & Stands'.

The previous lot in this auction is a similar chocolate cup, cover and stand from the Wentworth Wass Collection. This retains part of a letter from Charles Wentworth Wass stating that it had come from Lord Bridport's collection. This may have been inherited by Viscount Bridport from his mother, Nelson's niece Charlotte, Duchess of Bronte. The present lot bears a retail label for London dealers Stoner and Evans, similar to that on the Horatia Service teapot in this sale.

For further information on the Horatia Service please see the footnote to lot 41 in this sale.
