Ansel Adams
1902 - 1984
'Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico'

gelatin silver print, mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, the photographer's Carmel studio stamp (BMFA 11), with title in ink, on the reverse of the mount, framed
image: 15½ by 18¾ in. (39.4 by 47.6 cm.)
frame: 23¼ by 26 in. (60.3 by 66 cm.)
Executed in 1941, probably printed between 1973 and 1977.

Condition Report:
Please note the colors and shades in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings.

This print is in generally very good condition. Upon close examination, two deposits of the photographer's original retouching are visible near the left edge. Another deposit in the white clouds may have faded. Visible under raking light are faint brushstrokes and occasional superficial scratches in the sky area, none of which appear to break the emulsion, and may be the result of mounting. There are small chips to the emulsion at the edges at the lower left and lower right corners.

Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 11 on the reverse of the mount: 1973 through 1977.
