Anthonie Waterloo(1610- 1690) - Tobias and the Angel near the Waterfall

[ translate ]

\Artist: Anthonie Waterloo (1610- 1690)
Technique: Etching\Signature: Plate signed
One of the largest etchings by the famous landscape artist Antonie Waterloo, who was among the first artists to have established a reputation almost entirely based upon his work as a draftsman and printmaker. Waterloo also produced many etchings which increased his popularity and extended his influence into the next century and beyond to the French Barbizon painters of the mid-19th century. Many of Waterloo's larger etchings (some, like this one, almost the size of his paintings) are careful in their depiction of the smallest, individual detail. Signed in the plate at lower left corner "A. W. f. et Inv. ". Condition: a good even impression of the 2nd state on laid paper. Some minor stains near upper corners and a small non-obtrusive hole at the centre. Overall a fine copy. Same state as Rijksmuseum copy: RP-P-OB-61. 465. Reference: Hollstein 134-2.
