Note: Anthony Green is a significant twentieth-century British artist who studied at the Slade and is a Trustee of the Royal Academy. Green’s highly popular figurative paintings are often brightly coloured and irregularly shaped, and this piece is a typical example of the striking and unusual artworks which defined the artist’s style. It is this arresting effect of his paintings which led Green, a regular exhibitor at the RA Summer Exhibition, to win the Exhibit of the Year Award in 1977. The widespread reach of his artwork is also demonstrated in his participation in a diverse variety of touring exhibitions, from a tour of Japan in 1987 to a tour of cathedrals in Britain in 2000. His works are in public collections like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow; the Tate in London; alongside many others.
