Anthony Thieme (Dutch, 1876-1958) Oil Painting

[ translate ]

DESCRIPTION: An Anthony Thieme (Dutch-American, 1888-1954) oil painting on masonite board depicting a Rockport harbor scene with fishermen boats and Rockport fish pier as a backdrop. Signed on the lower right bottom corner. Framed.

Anthony Thieme was a dutch-born American landscape and maritime genre painter. Perhaps best remembered for his lasting influence on the Rockport School of painting in Massachusetts, Thieme painted his impressionistic landscapes en plein air, preferring to capture fleeting light and atmosphere conditions quickly and first hand rather than from the studio. He often painted coastal scenes of homes beside the sea, focusing on their distorted reflections in the water as a recurring theme. Born in 1888 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Thieme received his formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. He worked as an apprentice to painter George Hoecker before emigrating to the United States in the 1920s, eventually settling in Rockport, MA. He was the recipient of numerous honors and awards in his lifetime, including the Delano Prize from the New York Watercolor Club, and his work today can be found in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others. The artist died on December 6, 1954 in Greenwich, CT.
