Antique African Culture Chi Wawa Mask Effigy Carving

[ translate ]

Antique African Culture Chi Wawa Mask, Effigy Carving of the Bambara Culture of Mali; this carved figure represents the antelope god of the Bambara culture. This was worn as a headdress and attached to a basket like hat. This piece shows thin hammered metal, possibly copper, applied to the jaw, forehead and horns. Under the metal on the forehead is a remnant of red fabric. The wood is a light with a tight grain. This is a fantastic piece that shows much patina. It is considered to be in very good condition. It is possible that there was damage to the small figure on the back of the larger figure. If so, it appears this was long ago and the piece was modified for continued use. The piece measures 2 1/2" W x 8" L x 20 1/4" H.Â
