The wing is set behind expertly carved rock crystal quartz so it is well protected when the brooch is worn. The gemstones are set in silver-topped gold. The butterfly's eyes are round-shaped rubies measuring approximately 1.75 mm in diameter. The piece is marked with an Austro-Hungarian fox's-head hallmark for 14k gold. The piece is equipped with a pinstem and catch, added at a later date, which tests as yellow metal. The reverse of this piece is marked "Registered 1905", "224", and partially obscured initials where only "D.R." is visible. There are some scratches present throughout the metal, as well as lead solder where the pinstem is attached. The gemstones show minute chips, nicks, and abrasions.
