Antique Greek Orthodox Russian Icon- Saint Barbara

Item/Description: Outstanding early painted portrait on wood of St. Barbara, also known as the Great Martyr Barbara, a 3rd Century early Christian Greek martyr an born in Heliopolis, Phoenicia. Barbara was the daughter to a rich pagan named Dioscorus. After the death of Barbara's mother, Dioscorus dedicated his life to his only daughter. Known for her extreme beauty, Barbara's father shielded her from the world by locking her in a three windowed high tower, pictured in her left hand. Her only access was to her pagan teachers. Tragically martyred at the hands of her own father, she is known as the patron saint of artillerymen and miners.
Beautifully executed, fine detail. Cyrillic lettering across front, reads in part: "Holy Martyr Barbara." En verso, titled in Cyrillic ( difficult to discern) and dated 1902. Hanging hardware.

Material: Gilt Wood, Varnish, Paint.

Dimensions: Height: 11 1/2"; Width: 8"; Depth: 1 1/2".

Condition: Wear, age, chipping, craquelure. Hanging hardware intact.
