Title: Headhunters Naga Belt - Antique
Date/Period: Early to mid 20th century
Origin: Sema Naga, Dimapur District, Nagaland, India/Birma - Himalaya
Dimension: 23 x 6.5 x 3.3 inches – 1100 grams

Additional Information: Belt made of buffalo bone which was worn by the Sema Nagas during headhunter rituals. The "Nagas" are an ethnic group with an unmistakable common identity living in northeastern India and Myanmar in a particularly rugged area, in and around the Indian state of Nagaland. They are associated with the Adivasi (scheduled tribes). The "Sumi Naga" (or Sema Naga) are one of the most important ethnic groups in Nagaland. The Sümis mainly live in the Zünheboto district, Dimapur district and Kiphire district, and were, like the other Naga tribes, headhunters ("aki kiti") until the arrival of the Christian missionaries and their subsequent conversion to Christianity in the 1930s.
