Antique Inlaid Letter Document Box 19th Century

[ translate ]

A rich looking wood box with a wood veneer and a diamond design fashioned from inlaid mother of pearl on the lid and around the lock. We believe the box is from the early 19th Century but it could be older.

The box is made from a soft wood covered with a wood veneer. It is embellished with mother of pearl inlay and marquetry edge strips along the lid and the base. The pin hinges are brass. The front edge has a plate for a lock with a keyhole edged in mother of pearl in the front. The flat base is covered by green burlap. The interior of was lined with a white paper. The interior had two wood strips that would have held up a shelf or drawer. The underside of the lid had a silver paper liner which is now mostly gone.

MEASUREMENTS

10 ¾” (27.3 cm) long x 7 3/8” (18.7 cm) deep x 5 ½” (14.0 cm) tall. Weighs 2 lb 3.4 oz (1000 g)

CONDITION

Overall the box has a nice rich aged look, but there are scratches and abrasions over most the exterior. There is a crack on the front edge of lid near the inlay. There are chips out of the wood edging at the base, mainly along the front edge. The mother of pearl is intact except for one piece at the bottom of the keyhole. Several of the pieces have pits and chips.
The interior is missing paper lining and is stained. It is also missing a tray that would have rested inside. There is a hole on the base under the green burlap, but it doesn’t show through to the interior of the box.

A great rich looking box with much handwork and artistry.
