Antique Japanese Noh Theatre Mask with Articulated Jaw and Fabric Hood, Edo Period, 18th Century (dated circa 1766 by near infrared spectroscopy).

This exquisitely carved Japanese Cypress mask has a highly polished surface with a light even patina. It retains its original cords and hood, and has inscriptions written on the back.

These masks were held as prized possessions by the performers who wore them. This mask, depicting Okina was constructed for actual use in the theater and has been carefully preserved. There is only minor surface and handling wear.

The Okina (old man) mask is considered particularly sacred and has been at times treated as the embodiment of God, bringing longevity and prosperity to families.
