Antique Japanese Sword - A 1500

[ translate ]

Title: Antique Japanese Sword - A 1500's Wakazashi by Sukesada Origin: Japan Date/Period: 1500's Dimensions: 14 7/8 Kissaki to Habaki

An Bizen Wakazashi, attributed to Sukesada. Sukesada is a name forever synonymous with the Bizen region. Given the time period, along with the qualities of the sword, it is highly likely that this sword was forged by Hikobei-no-Jo Sukesada. Fujishiro ranks Hikobei-no-jo as Saijo-saku (a grandmaster swordsmith) in their Nihon Koto Jiten reference book. His works are found from 1489-1519. The sword is in good old polish and is protected by a very nice older Shira Saya. The habaki is custom made and noched to fit the bohi. The blade is in excellent condition and razor sharp though the tip needs repair. Speaking with a sword polisher, he stated there was plenty of hamon in the kisaki and it would be an easy fix. Although technically a wakizashi with its cutting edge being 14 7/8 in, one must regard this sword as a shorter version of the atypical katana of the time. It was crafted for a warrior that demanded this length of sword to comfortably fight with. Swords from this era were made for one-handed use as hand-to-hand combat was commonplace. I have included two close up photos showing sword strikes to the edge of the blade, attesting to it's history in battle. Overall this is an excellent sword that is over 500 years old.
