Antique Mamluk Copper Charger Platter Cairoware, Zodiacs

[ translate ]

Antique Middle Eastern Ottoman Islamic tinned copper tray or charger, hand embossed with punch chisels, 12 zodiacs surrounding the heaven in the middle: birds, animals, and flowers. The heavenly love is shown as a loving couple united as one flower. There is a small engraved inscription in the Arab calligraphy.

This large tray is made of heavy solid copper, 15.1/4" [38.8cm] across, aging, some genuine patina, very good condition.

Although called 'Cairoware', these trays were made in Egypt, Syria Persia, and other North African and Middle Eastern countries beginning in the early 19th C., as a way of reviving the sophisticated metalwork craftsmanship that was typical of the Mamluk era, in the Middle Ages. As such, it is also referred to as 'Mamluk revival' metalwork.

Chasing or embossing is a technique in which the piece is hammered on the front side, sinking the metal. These techniques are very ancient and have been extensively used all over the world, as they require only the simplest tools and materials, and yet allow great diversity of expression. They are also relatively economical, since there is no loss or waste of metal, which mostly retains its original size and thickness. Toolmarks are often intentionally left visible in the result.

Rates vary per zone/ country, we will adjust shipping price with the invoice.

Country restrictions may apply - the lesser expansive Priority shipping may not be available to all countries.

US: Priority (c.2-4 days) ------------- $48.50
