Beautiful old wooden home altar with the statue of Sugawara no Michizane 菅原 道真/菅原 道眞, god of learning, Tenman-Tenjin 天満天神 Japan, ca. 1880, Meiji period Sugawara no Michizane is depicted in sitting position with a Shaku (笏) or wooden baton in his right hand, beautiful garment called kariginu (狩衣) and Eboshi hat (烏帽子) . A rare Japanese shrine in good condition given the age. Dimensions approx. : 18,5 cm wide (open) , 10,5 cm wide (closed) , 12,6 cm high, depth 7,8 cm Sugawara no Michizane (845-903) , also known as Kan Shōjō or Kanke, was a scholar, poet, and politician of the Heian Period of Japan. He is regarded as an excellent poet, particularly in Kanshi poetry, and is today revered in Shinto as the god of learning, Tenman-Tenjin. Will be sent by registered mail.
