Antique Oak Tavern / Refectory Bench with Pegged Construction
A substantial antique oak bench of traditional vernacular construction, having a long single-plank seat with rounded ends and visible inset timber repairs/pegs. Raised on broad slab end supports united by a long low stretcher with projecting pegged tenons, with shaped rails beneath the seat. The oak displays a well-developed warm patina, pronounced grain and considerable character from age and use.
The construction, particularly the slab ends, through-tenoned stretcher and wedges/pegs, suggests a genuinely older piece rather than a modern reproduction.
Dimensions: Approx. 145 cm wide × 32 cm deep × 66 cm high.
Condition: Used antique condition with substantial age-related wear, surface marks, scratches, staining, old repairs and general patination throughout. Some wear and losses around the feet/lower edges as photographed. The numerous marks to the seat are consistent with prolonged use and form part of the character of the piece
