Antique Pair Royal Worcester Pate Sur Pate Vases

[ translate ]

This pair of porcelain vases was produced in England by Royal Worcester in 1873. The vases measure 10 3/8 inches high, 3 ½ inches wide and 8 ½ inches in length. They were made in the Aesthetic Period and have strong Asian influence in their design. They are considered to be “moon flasks” with a round shape and narrow depth. The ground is high glaze celadon green. The decoration is multi colored pate sur pate, a process of layering slip on the vase to create high relief designs. It is a highly skilled, laborious technique. These vases depict naturalistic subjects of herons in a pond surrounded by water lilies, cattails and other wetland plants. The ornate porcelain handles and base are created to imitate carved wood. Tones of bronze and gold in matte finish contrast against the high gloss of the body. The scenes compliment each other and were originally created as a matched pair. The herons face each other. Condition: Excellent. There is no wear, restoration or defect of any kind.
