Antique Phnom Da Style Mounted Stone Khmer Buddha Head

[ translate ]

A 7th century style Khmer stone Buddha head in Phnom Da style. The Buddha displays the triple topknot of hair, an Indian convention much favoured in early Khmer art to denote childhood. Several pre-Angkorian examples in the National Museum of Cambodia, Phnom Penh share a similiar form. The broad faces, treatment of the hair curls and linear eyebrows have affinities with Buddhist imagery from the seventh-century Mon regions of neighbouring Thailand, suggesting a shared visual repertoire. The Buddha is carved from sandstone. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. The carving and patina is simply beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful. The Buddha head is mounted on a wood base (later). Provenance: Ex- private US Collection.

Provenance: Private US Collection

Medium: Stone

Dimensions: 33cm / 13”

General Condition: Good condition. Consistent with age.
