The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, cream, yellow, light brown, copper, white, pink, blues and black. Alphabets A-Z in upper case Verse reads'Jesus Permit thy Gracious Name to ftand>As the first Effort of an Infant Hand>And while her Fingers on the Canvas move>Engage her tender thoughts to seek thy love>With thy dear Children let her have a part>And write the Name thyself upon her Heart'. Signed and dated 'Elizabeth Woolvin Her Work May the 9th 1823'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden, a cat in a tree, a dog, birds, potted flowering plants, a stag, fruit baskets, fir trees, trees, peacocks, butterflies and a sheep. Original letter describing family relationship, attached to reverse of sampler, written by the granddaughter of Elizabeth Woolvin, in March 1939.

Condition Report:

Good. A few small holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. Some stitch losses to some of the motifs and signature mount. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
