Antique two compartment Coin purse, a souvenir of the Columbian Exposition of 1893. Two silver plated brass plaquettes mounted in tin frame holding the leather bag. Two covers can be opened separately for small and large coins.

The smaller plaquette is a relief portrait of Columbus holding a map. The larger plaquette shows the carrack "Santa Maria" in the middle; on the upper left is the coat of arms of the Crown of Castile, the sponsor of the Columbus' voyage, and "1492" on the upper right side is the US crest with the eagle and "1892."

The tin frame of the purse is c. 3.1/2" x 1.3/4" [8.9cm x 4.5cm]; the smaller brass plaquette is 1.1/8" x 1.1/2" [2.9cm x 3.8cm]; the larger plaquette is 2.1/4" x 1.1/2" [5.8cm x 3.8cm]; the leather bag is c.3.3/4" x 2" [9.5cm x 5.1cm]; silver plating wear; tin patina; the leather bag has holes around the metal frame, despite the fragile look, the leather is elastic. Very good condition. See photos.

World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, was the first Chicago World's Fair. It was held in commemoration of 400 years since Columbus' arrival to the New World. The Exposition was a city within the city of Chicago, consisting of 200 new and elaborate buildings constructed specifically for the occasion. The World's Columbian Exposition was at once entertainment and culture, a display of intellectual and artistic endeavors and traditions, and a way to make money. Forty-three states and territories and over 45 countries were represented at the fair, each with their own attractions and demonstrations.

There were countless souvenir stands throughout the fair that sold everything from postcards, books and maps to cups and salt shakers. Visitors were eager to take a piece of the fair home with them. Commemorative plates, cups, and spoons were very popular souvenirs at the fair.
