Antique Victorian Engraving, Feeding the Swans, 1860s, Oak Frame
"Feeding the Swans" plate from the Peterson's Magazine, 1860s, steel engraving, stated "Engraved and printed by Illman Brothers," framed in picture mat and oak wood glass frame.
The engraved picture is c.5" x 7" [12.7cm x 17.8cm]; the entire plate is c.7.1/2" x 9.1/2" [19.1cm x 24.2cm] ; the picture mat is 8" x 10.1/8" [20.3cm x 25.7cm]. The oak wood frame is c.9.3/4" x 11.1/2" [24.8cm x 29.2cm]; very good condition.
Illman Brothers was an American engraving and printing company in Philadelphia, active as a firm late 1850s and still in existence in 1898. The firm included Edward, George, Henry, and William Illman Charles T. Illman, born about 1842, joined his brothers in the firm after 1860. They are best known for the monthly "Mode Parisienne" hand-colored engraved plates for the fashion magazines. They also created numerous steel and copper engraved plates for the American, mainly Philadelphia located publishers.
Several plates by Illman Brothers, including their steel engravings for Peterson's Magazine can be found in various museum collections. [reference: Metropolitan Museum of Arts, NYC].
Peterson's Magazine was a periodical for women which published tips on fashion, etiquette and child rearing, 1855-1892. Magazine focused on the domestic and consumer lives of middle-class women, the pages of Peterson's featured fashion, embroidery patterns, sheet music, engravings, poetry, short stories, serialized fiction, recipes, remedies, housekeeping advice, puzzles, and more.
