Antique late-Edo Period carved TSUBA with inlay leaves - Gold leaf, Iron (cast/wrought), Silver gilt - Japan - Late Edo period
The Tsuba, a handguard of the Japanese sword, was often made quite complicated during the EDO period (and certainly in the late phase (1750-1860) .
This tsuba is also an example of the excellent craftsmanship from this period - probably made in the spirit of the Katsuki & Kaneko school in Kaga.
The high-quality carvings/drawing on both sides of the Tsuba depict a beach where the wind blows ripples into the spreading wave of the water and at the same time plays with the gold inlaid leaves.
One side bears a quality mark/stamp which unfortunately does not reveal any further details.
