Antoine Monis as a baby - antisemitic poster from the "Monsters Exhibition"

An impressive colour lithographic print depicting Antoine Monis (1882-1952), son and private secretary of the Minister of Justice, shown as a baby because he was only 17 years old on July 1, 1899 when he became head of his father's private secretariat. Antoine holds a rattle stamped "Ministry of Justice" and a bottle of Martell cognac. His father served as Minister of Justice when Dreyfus was given final pardon.
The "Monsters Exhibition" series was published during the Dreyfus Affair under a pseudonym, containing 51 large posters with anti-Dreyfus, anti-Semitic and anti-Masonic illustrations. It was published in France over about a year, between October 1899 and December 1900. The original plan was to issue 200 posters in the series, but only 51 were actually published. The first posters sold over 300,000 copies. In October 1899 the French police arrested several peddlers selling the posters on orders from Prefect of Police Louis Lépine. According to some reports, Lépine ordered distribution to stop following a request from Baron de Rothschild, who argued the damage from distribution would be irreparable. In February 1900 the local police sent letters threatening to revoke traders' licenses if they sold the posters, which ended their distribution.
