Anton Kern - Annunciation
Anton Kern
Annunciation
Red chalk on paper. 44,5 x 28 cm.
Framend under glass.
Monogrammed on the right-hand margin: AK. f.
The composition of this Annunciation scene bears clear similarities to 18th-century Venetian painting. It is highly likely to be the work of Anton Kern, who was born in Bohemia and trained in Dresden and Venice. At the age of 14, he joined the workshop of Giovanni Battista Pittoni in Venice, whose influence had a profound effect on him.
Around 1730, Pittoni created an altarpiece depicting the Annunciation for Kraków Cathedral. Anton Kern produced several drawings based on this work; some follow the original more closely, whilst others, such as this sheet, do so to a lesser extent.
This drawing is of outstanding quality, which is why it has been owned by prominent collectors such as the Duke of Arenberg in Brussels and Baron von Lanna in Prague.
Provenance
D‘Arenberg Collection, Brussels / Nordkirchen (Westphalia) (Lugt 567). – Adalbert Baron von Lanna, Prague (Lugt 2773). – Private German collection.
