Anton Mauve initially encountered resistance from his father, a preacher, to become an artist. Nevertheless, in 1854, at the age of sixteen, he was given permission to apprentice with Pieter Frederik van Os, a renowned Haarlem cattle painter. This step marked the beginning of Mauve's continued development as an artist. In the summer of 1858, at the insistence of his Haarlem painter friend and mentor Gabriel, who was ten years older, Mauve left for Oosterbeek. In Oosterbeek, Mauve developed a deep affinity with nature and became skilled in painting 'en plein air'. During this period he met Willem Maris, with whom he built a close friendship. Throughout the 1960s, Mauve regularly returned to Oosterbeek, where he was inspired by the idyllic landscapes of meadows, forests and heaths, populated with herds of grazing sheep, which epitomized the rural charm of the area. These environments and experiences would have a lasting influence on his artworks, which are characterized by their vivid depiction of the natural world.
