Anton Mauve (1838-1888) - Gevel van een vervallen boerderij in de duinen

[ translate ]

\Artist: Anton Mauve (1838-1888)
Technique: Oil on paper\Signature: Hand signed\Dimensions: 54_60_5_cm
The father of Anton Mauve, a preacher in Haarlem, initially resisted his son's wish to become an artist. But in 1954, at the age of 16, he was allowed to become an apprentice to the Haarlem cattle painter Pieter Frederik van Os. It was the beginning of a career in which the painter would constantly develop. In the summer of 1858 Mauve moved to Oosterbeek, persuaded to do so by Gabriel, a painter who was ten years his senior from Haarlem. The ideas of the French painters of Barbizon were put into practice in this Veluwe village. The aim was to portray nature and the mood of the moment as realistically as possible. So the young artists went out into nature with their painting supplies to observe it on the spot and record their impressions. Mauve developed a great love for nature and practiced working 'en plein air'. He also got to know Willem Maris, who became a good friend. Mauve kept coming back to Oosterbeek throughout the 1960s. He found the rich variety of pastureland with cattle, forest and heathland with flocks of grazing sheep whose rural activities enchanted him. The work on offer, a depiction of a dilapidated farm in the dunes, fits exactly in the vision of the artist and the Hague School; capturing the beauty that threatens to be lost. The painting is signed lower right. The work is painted on paper and pasted on a wooden panel. The paper is locally puckered and the panel is curved. Nevertheless, the representation is perfectly perceptible and the bumps can be reduced or removed with a restoration. The painting was bought at the time from the renowned art dealer Borzo in Den Bosch. The authentic list is still present. Provenance: Private origin Panel dimensions 34 x 40 cm. You are most welcome to view the work at art dealership Art Dumay in Nuenen.
