Antonín Slavíček (1870 - 1910) A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST'S WIFE
Kolem 1900
charcoal drawing, paper on cardboard
420 x 345 mm (h x w)
Signed: Signed lower left: A. S.
Slavíček's wife Míla, nee. Brynychová, whom he married in 1895, appears repeatedly in his paintings, usually as a stagecoach. The present drawing is a distinctive portrait, showing her from behind and with a gesture vaguely reminiscent of playing the piano. The concise and convincing execution, together with the novel concept of the likeness, makes the offered drawing a work of exceptional quality, unique in the artist's oeuvre. Published in Czech portraits over two centuries on page 199 under the title Mrs Míla.
