Antonio Bellucci - Venus and Cupid (Allegory of the Arts)
Antonio Bellucci
Venus and Cupid (Allegory of the Arts)
Oil on canvas. 126 x 160 cm.
The laurel-crowned Venus, depicted from behind, draws the viewer’s gaze into the interior of a palace. She contemplates her reflection, which is held by two putti. As with its counterpart (Lot 1048), a female nude serves as the focal point of the composition.
The composition is to be understood as an allegory of the arts.
We would like to thank Professor Bernard Aikema, Venice, for attributing this previously unknown large-scale work to Antonio Bellucci.
Provenance
Private collection, southern Germany.
