The painting shows a dynamic battle scene featuring both horsemen and infantry engaged in intense combat. In the foreground, two soldiers, one wielding a stiletto and the other a spear, charge towards a horseman on the left. Unaware of the horseman in the centre ready to strike with his sword, the soldier with the spear remains vulnerable. Meanwhile, the attacked rider retaliates with a blow of his own. The outcome of the battle is left open to interpretation. To the right, a fallen soldier and a discarded helmet lie on the ground, while further horsemen continue to engage in combat. In the background, a cloud of smoke rises illuminated by firelight. A fortress rises on a hill in the distance on the right.
