[ translate ]

After Antonio Canaletto (Italian, 1697-1768) Riva degli schiavoni, Venice (View on the Grand Canal) Oil on canvas 32 x 52 inches (81.3 x 132.1 cm) Property from the Estate of Mr. and Mrs. O.D. Harrison, Shreveport, Louisiana PROVENANCE: Leon Schinassi, New York; Comte Spinetti, Paris; Mrs. S.W. Peck, New York; Dalva Brothers, Inc., New York; Acquired by the present owner from the above, 1953. The original work by Canaletto, painted circa 1734-1735, currently resides in the Sir John Soane's Museum, London. Canaletto specialist Charles Beddington kindly shared with Heritage Auctions that this lively work was produced during the early 19th century when paintings made in emulation of Canaletto’s panoramic Venetian views were exceedingly popular. Like the majority of the early 19th-century Canaletto copies, this painting measures 30 x 50 inches—dimensions which preserve the proportions of the Soane composition that measures a more expansive 50 x 80 inches.
