Aouinet Legraa - From the Asteroid Vesta, An Exotic Unbrecciated Eucrite HED achondrite (Eucrite, unbrecciated) Tindouf, Algeria - (27° 5'N, 7° 1'W) This incredible meteorite was part of the fireball seen on July 17, 2013 in Tindouf and Aum el Assel, Algeria. It required nine months of searching the desert before the Aouinet Legraa strewn field was finally located. Vitreous plagioclase laths, abundant bronze-colored sulfides and grains of prismatic pigeonite comprise the matrix of this specimen. A magnifying glass will reveal innumerable small crystals and mineral grains packed tightly together and when this specimen is rotated in a light-it literally glitters. The part of the matrix that is not exposed is covered with rippling jet black fusion crust-the result of burning through Earth's atmosphere. Overall Measurements: 3.5 x 1.75 x 1.75 inches (9.1 x 4.5 x 4.5 cm), weighs 179.5 grams
