With a NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club color cachet of the moon landing and a cancelled 6-cent Apollo 8 stamp featuring the iconic NASA "Earthrise" image, postmarked July 20, 1969 at Houston, Texas. Near fine, with beautiful examples of all three crew signatures with two bonus signatures. 6.5" x 3.625". This item has been pre-certified by space expert Steve Zarelli. If you wish to purchase a comprehensive COA, please contact him directly via zarellispaceauthentication.com. Provenance: Superior Stamp & Coin Fall 1999 Space Memorabilia Auction, Lot 624.
This cover is one of three different designs used by the Apollo 11 crew to serve as a form of life insurance for their families in the event that a catastrophe occurred during the mission which prevented the crew's safe return. Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin crewed the Apollo 11 mission to space from July 16-July 24, 1969. Armstrong and Aldrin were the first humans to step onto the Moon's gray and granular surface on July 20, 1969. While on the Moon, the astronauts took photographs, placed a TV camera, collected geological samples, set up seismic and laser experiments, and even spoke with President Richard Nixon through a telephone-radio transmission, which Nixon called "the most historic phone call ever made from the White House." Oberth's and Nebel's contributions to space rocketry cannot be overestimated.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
