[Apollo 11] The pristine and untouched surface of another world. Buzz Aldrin, 16–24 July 1969. Printed 1969. Vintage gelatin silver print on fiber-based paper [NASA image AS11–40-5876, originally shot on color film]. 25.4×20.3 cm (10×8 in), numbered “AS11–40-5876” in bottom margin (NASA / United States Geological Survey, Flagstaff, Arizona).

Literature: Full Moon, Light, pl. 47.

This extremely rare unpublished image shows the pristine lunar soil just before Aldrin photographed the most famous footprint in history.

Armstrong and Aldrin shared only one Hasselblad camera for use on the lunar surface. After he got the camera for the first time, Aldrin took a series of close-up pictures for the Bootprint Penetration Experiment. He framed this shot by hand-holding the camera above the ground instead of having it on the RCU (Remote Control Unit) bracket mounted on his chest.

“This is the result of six billion years of evolution. Tonight, we have given the lie to gravity. We have reached for the stars.” Ray Bradbury (BBC TV, 20 July 1969).

Condition Report:Excellent condition.
