[Apollo 12] Alan Bean collecting lunar samples near Halo Crater. Pete Conrad, November 14–24, 1969, EVA 2. Printed 1969. Vintage gelatin silver print on resin coated paper [NASA image AS12–49-7286]. 20.3×25.4 cm (8×10 in), with very faint NASA caption numbered “AS12–49-7286” on the verso (NASA Kennedy Space Center, Florida).

Literature: Apollo 12 Preliminary Science Report (NASA SP-235), frontispiece.

Pete Conrad took this photograph of Alan Bean at a geology stop located near a group of small craters about twenty meters south of Halo Crater, a 6m wide crater located to the south of Surveyor Crater’s rim, but which the crew had difficulty locating. This was their last stop before arriving at the location of Surveyor III.

Alan Bean is hammering a double core tube using the flat of the hammer. Because of the stiffness of the suit, it is difficult to control the swing and, by using the flat, he is more certain of actually hitting the top of the extension handle. Bean is wearing a “saddlebag” on his left hip, with a pack of flat sample bags attached at the back. (ALSJ caption for AS12–49-7286).

From the mission transcript when the photograph was taken:

133:25:33 Bean: Want to take a picture? 133:25:34 Conrad: Yep. (Garbled) 133:25:36 Bean: I can shove it in a little. I hope this is a good soft place. 133:25:39 Conrad: Yeah. 133:25:41 Bean: It seems to be. Oh, I hit something solid there. (To Houston) Well, I used all my weight, Houston, and shoved it in about seven inches. Now, I’ll just pound on it a while and see what we can do. (Pause) It (seems to) be going in okay. Yeah. It’s going on down.

Condition Report:Excellent condition.
