[Apollo 12] Pete Conrad at Ocean of Storms Base. Alan Bean, 14–24 November 1969, EVA 1. Printed 1969. Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS12–47-6988]. 25.4×20.3 cm (10×8 in), with NASA caption numbered “AS12–47-6988” and “A Kodak Paper” watermarks on the verso, numbered “NASA AS12–47-6988” in red in top margin (NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas).

Literature: Time, 5 December 1969, pg. 41 Apollo: Through the Eyes of the Astronauts, Jacobs, p. 77.

This rare photograph of Pete Conrad next to Intrepid is a frame of the panoramic sequence of the landing site facing the 4 o’clock side of the LM taken by Alan Bean at the end of the first EVA. (At the beginning of the first EVA Conrad mistakenly took his three panoramas of the landing site at 15-foot focus instead of 74-foot focus. Consequently he asked Alan Bean to shoot them again at the end of EVA 1).

Conrad is working at the Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly (MESA) of the Lunar Module, trying to get the rock box latched on the MESA table. (ALSJ caption for AS12–47-6988). The American flag decal is clearly visible on the LM Intrepid. The dish antenna (S-band antenna, right side of picture) was used for communicating with Earth. The Hand Tool Carrier (HTC) is near Pete Conrad in the foreground.

“I’ve always said that the thing I did the best and enjoyed the most was getting there and getting back. The fact that I had to do some work when I got there_it wasn’t “exploring”_, it was payment for getting to make the trip.” Pete Conrad (Chaikin, Voices, p.162).

From the mission transcript when the photograph was taken:

118:31:53 Bean: Okay, one more set (of pictures) to go. 118:31:56 Conrad: Okay. 118:31:59 Bean: I’ve got this bag of rocks on me, here. Want me to bring them to you in a minute? 118:32:03 Conrad: Well, I’m having trouble over here with the rock-box holders. 118:32:09 Bean: Okay. If you have a little trouble, I can help you with it. 118:32:13 Conrad: Yeah. This rock box keeps wanting to go up in the air. (Pause) Nope. The heck with it. I ain’t got time to mess with it. (Pause, taking the scale out of the rock box) One scale. (Long Pause) 118:32:48 Conrad: Got to get this core tube, buddy. 118:32:50 Bean: I know it. (Pause) As fast as I can. (Pause) 118:33:10 Bean: Okay, all the pans are done, Pete. Okay?

Condition Report:Excellent condition.
