Apple 1984 'Test Drive a Macintosh' Dealer Poster

[ translate ]

Very rare 1984 color 57.25 x 34.25 Apple Computer dealer poster for the Macintosh 128K personal computer, which depicts a large hand with racing glove primed to tap a computer mouse button, with large bold text above: “Test drive a Macintosh.” The lower right corner features the original ‘rainbow-striped’ Apple logo. Rolled and in very good to fine condition, with scattered creases, mostly to left and right edges and a couple to “M” in Macintosh, and swatches of scotch tape to corners, which feature tack holes and some missing paper. This poster derives from the personal collection of a former employee of Apple Computer, Inc.When initial Mac sales prove disappointing, Apple CEO John Sculley dreamed up the “Test Drive a Macintosh” campaign to encourage people to give the revolutionary new computer a chance. The campaign was designed to convince skeptical users to wrap their heads around Apple’s new machine; many of them had never seen a graphical user interface, used a mouse, or had much experience with non-IBM computers. The promotional strategy advised people in possession of a credit card to drop into their local retailer and ‘borrow’ a Macintosh for a period of 24 hours. The hope was that by the time customers had to return their Mac, they would have built up a bond with the computer and realized they couldn’t live without one. This exceedingly rare poster was only given to dealers that signed up for the short-lived program.
