Rare April 18, 1865 Printed U.S. "Receipt for Direct Taxes"
April 18, 1865-Dated Civil War Era, Partly-Printed Document, Completed Four Days after Abraham Lincoln's Assassination, United States "Receipt for Direct Taxes" at Petersburg, VA., Fine.
Important and rare Partly-Printed early "U.S. Tax" Receipt Document measuing about 8.75" x 6.25", 1 page, complete. Document reads, in part:
"UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. -- Receipt for Direct Taxes. -- This is to Certify, That Noblin, has this day paid to the undersigned the sum of nine Dollars and seventy-two Cents,... under the Act of Congress entitled, "An act for the collection of direct taxes in insurrecting districts within the United States, and for other purposes...". Docket on reverse. Some folds and creases, light soiling, low serial number "63" with likely a unique status as being existant to this day. Issued only four days after President Abraham Lincoln's Assassination at Ford's Theater, and targeting taxes to be paid by "collection of direct taxes in insurrecting districts"! The first we have seen and offered.
