Apulian Pottery Red-Figure Globular Lidded Pyxis

Classical World, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 300 BCE. A fine pottery pyxis - a lidded box used mostly by women to hold cosmetics, jewelry, and other important items - displaying a hemispherical basin and lid that fit together to form a spherical body with a knob-like handle at the top, all sitting upon a tiered, pedestal foot. The lid is adorned with a red-figure "Lady of Fashion" - a motif often thought to show a woman with her hair done elaborately for her marriage day - along with a large palmette and swirling vegetal designs, all accented with white-painted highlights. Alternatively, the exterior of the base is decorated with a wreath of laurel leaves. A silvery iridescence has formed over the black glaze, adding a luminous quality to the vessel's elaborate design. Condition Report: Collection label on base. Lid and bowl were perhaps not original to each other. Bowl repaired from 2 pieces with break line visible. Chips to rims of lid and bowl. Expected surface wear with some minor nicks and abrasions. Otherwise, excellent with nice remaining decoration and beautiful iridescence to black pigment.
