Apulian Pottery kylix decorated with a sea bird, 24 cm in diameter (including handles)

An attractive kylix with a classical form. On the tondo is a long-legged seabird with a curved beak and feathered wings surrounded by an elegant rim, and undulating spiral motifs adorn the outer walls, all in black enamel. A Kylix was a type of vessel, similar to a goblet or chalice, with two handles so that it could be held with both hands. These vessels were usually intended for Greek festivities and were therefore used for drinking wine. Provenance: Louis Maury, Geneva (Switzerland) , acquired in 1958 by inheritance from J. Lowther, Oxford (UK) , 1994. A. Van der zee acquired from the above in 2002 Amsterdam, Netherlands / Swiss Private Collection, Lugano, 2021 Statement seen by Catawiki. Important information.
