Provenance: With modern manuscript note (affixed to rear), 'This strange trophy was given by the Sultan of Turkey to my great uncle & godfather Admiral, the Hon. Augustus Hobart. The script is a charm to protect him from evil spirits'. Augustus Charles Hobart-Thompson (1822-1886) was an English naval officer who held the rank of admiral in the Ottoman navy.
