Provenance: The archangel Gabriel (Hebrew: God has shown His strength), together with Michael, is the most important of the seven archangels who stand by God's throne. In the Bible Gabriel acts as God's messenger on four occasions, the best known and most important of these being the Annunciation, or the announcement of Christ's birth to the Virgin. The Archangel Gabriel's attitude and clothing indicate that the present icon comes from the Deesis tier of an iconostasis. In the Deesis tier (Greek for 'prayer' or 'intercession') Christ appears to judge mankind, flanked by saints and angels, who turn towards him, deep in prayer. On the icon Gabriel meekly bows his head in prayer to Christ, pleading with Him for mankind's salvation. Provenance: private collection Germany. Every icon is sold with extensive written expertise.
