Archibald Coates Wigan George III Mahogany Grandmother's Clock, 18th Century, the dial inscribed Archd Coates Wigan; the works 2nd half of the 18th century, the mahogany case of later date; eight-day weight driven movement with relatively rare man-o-war rocking ship automaton in arch above engraved steel dial with Roman chapter ring, brass cherub in the spandrels. Coates is recorded as a "clock and watch maker of repute", Archibald Coates of Wigan was a prolific clockmaker working in Wigan, Lincolnshire from 1749 or a little earlier, until his death there in 1797.
