Archive grouping related to Civil War officer and businessman Thomas Young England (1837-1906). Grouping includes; 1.) CDV album with cover inscription in gilt"Presented to Thomas Y. England by the Bible Class Berlin Baptist Sabbath School". Album measures 6.25" x 9" x 2.5" and contains 56 Carte-de-visite (CDV) photographs, 7 CDV sized tintypes and one cabinet card. Photographs date from the 1860"s thru 1870"s. Images of note are a bust view of a bearded Lincoln engraving (backmark: Fredericks, New York), Girl with dog (backmark: Evans, York) and bust view of a Civil War officer (backmark: Hipple, Philadelphia). Balance of images are England family members or friends with some identified. 2.) A 1920"s copy photograph of a Civil War officer with uniform, forage hat with"US" in wreath and wearing a sword and belt rig. Sheet measures 13.5" x 10" with image being an oval 8.5" x 6.25". Sitter identified in ink as"Major Thomas Young England Civil War". 3.) Albumin photograph of 2-Civil War officers in winter quarters in front of tent. Board measures"9.5" x 11.5" with mounted photograph measuring 6.75" x 9". Reverse of photograph presents pencil inscription"Captain Thomas England (standing) (later made Major) General Thomas Wilson (seated) during Civil War 1863 in Virginia". General Thomas Wilson (1832-1901) was a Brevet Brigadier General during the Civil War and served as Chief Commissary of Subsistence for the Army of the Potomac. 4.) Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) medal exhibiting nice toning. 5.) Pair of Civil War period staff (black background) rank straps for a Captain. Straps measures 1" x 3.5" and are in excellent condition. 6.) Pair of Civil War period staff (black background) rank straps for a Captain. Straps measures 1.5" x 4" and are in excellent condition. 7.) Small silver medal measuring 0.75" in diameter with obverse featuring a trefoil with interior engraved text"Oct 17, 1862. Reverse features engraved text"Oct 17, 87". This medal was celebrating England"s 25th wedding anniversary to Emma Clarissa Combs England. 8.) Small grouping of items including; pocket watch key, lapel stud for MOLLUS (Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States), square headed nail, small (0.5") fragment of iron, and a pair of 1" stone buttons. 8.) Framed photograph of Thomas England, wife and immediate family members. Framed photograph measures 15.5" x 17.5". Thomas Young England (1837-1906) was born in Wilmington Delaware and enlisted as a first lieutenant and quartermaster of the 1st Delaware Infantry on September 17, 1861. He was discharged by reason of promotion to the US Volunteers on March 1, 1863. England was mad a captain and Commissary of Subsistence U. S. Volunteers on February 19, 1863. He resigned and was honorably discharged on December 2, 1864. He was elected on February 1, 1884 as a member of MOLLUS. After his military service Thomas entered into his family"s business of"James England and Son Leather Works". Upon his father"s retirement in 1872, Thomas became a leader in the company eventually becoming the senior president of the largest leather wholesaling company in the United States. Thomas England moved to Prospect Park, Redlands, California in his later life and pursued philanthropic endeavors. While never promoted to the military rank of major, many of his friends and family referred to him as"The Major".
