What a spectacle. First world war. Netherlands neutral but ready. Barely in control of the horses. Watching citizens. Tired soldiers. Written on the back of the old cardboard . . . the Grebbeberg after maneuvers in the Betuwe. . A M Luijt Watercolor view size 46x38 . Splendid state. Expensive listed. museum glass Ex Christie s Luijt was educated at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague and at the Academy Julian in Paris. He further qualified as an apprentice with Frits Jansen, Roland Larij and Jules Joseph Augustin Laurens. Luijt worked successively in Dordrecht, The Hague, Paris, Schaerbeek, again in The Hague, again in Paris, Cape Town (South Africa) and finally ended up via The Hague in Wassenaar. He was an illustrator, wall painter, painter, watercolourist, lithographer, (political) draftsman and decorative painter (of interiors) . The most important materials for him were watercolor and oil paint, with which he made flower still lifes, landscapes, horses, figure representations, allegories and village scenes. He was a member of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague and the Hague Art Circle and the Nieuwe of Littéraire Sociëteit 'De Witte'.
