Arnold Lobel (American, 1933-1987) The Corner, Frog and Toad All Year book interior study, 1976 Pencil on tracing paper 5-1x2 x 4-1x2 inches (14.0 x 11.4 cm) (image) Not signed Author and illustrator Arnold Lobel created this work as a preliminary sketch for his children's book Frog and Toad All Year (Harper & Row, 1976). The final version of the work can be found on page 18 in the second chapter The Corner. Slight differences can be seen in the positioning of the figures, expressions on their faces as well as in the clothing on each. In the work, dripping Frog and Toad appear ready for some tea after their adventures in the snow. Lobel's iconic duo, inspired by his childhood memories and beloved pets, reflects the push-and-pull balance of friendship between the usually anxious Toad and the optimistic Frog.
