Arseny Meshchersky - A fisherman and two children fishing in southern Crimea
Arseny Meshchersky
A fisherman and two children fishing in southern Crimea
Oil on canvas. 90 x 122 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: A. Meshcherewsky (kyrillisch) / 1870.
During the 13th and 14th centuries, the Crimean Tatars on the peninsula developed into a distinct ethnic group. Their clothing combines the traditions of the ancient steppe peoples with Ottoman elegance and influences from the neighbouring Caucasian regions. This painting by Arseny Meshchersky depicts two boys in this characteristic traditional dress whilst fishing on the southern coast of Crimea.
The format of the painting suggests that it was intended for exhibition to the public.
Provenance
Since two generations in German private collection.
