Arthur Woodward was an active and prolific scholar in the fields of historical archaeology, museum curatorship, and military and Western history. His research resulted in sig- nificant publications on American Indian trade goods, especially beads, silver, tomahawks and pipes. Throughout his career he worked closely with colleagues in and consulted for the National Parks Service, and authored or co-authored numerous Parks Service reports. As a museum professional in California and Arizona, at the Los Angeles County Museum and the Arizona Historical Society respectively, Woodward designed and administered museum exhibits and collecting policies.
