A.B. Frost was an influential American illustrator, painter, and cartoonist who became a leading figure during the Golden Age of American Illustration. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Frost began his career working in wood engraving and lithography before gaining recognition in 1874 for illustrating the humorous book "Out of the Hurly-Burly" by Charles Heber Clark. He later studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins and worked for major publishers and magazines, including "Harper's" and "Life." Frost illustrated more than 90 books, including works by Lewis Carroll, Mark Twain, and Joel Chandler Harris. He became especially famous for his illustrations of Br'er Rabbit in the Uncle Remus stories, as well as humorous drawings of everyday life and detailed and accurate hunting scenes like the present work. His innovative use of sequential images to portray movement and action helped influence the development of modern comic strips.

Frost's most popular chromolithographs "English Snipe Shooting" from his "Shooting Pictures" folio published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, NY in 1895-1896. In the widely circulated chromolithograph, the dogs are in a different position, and the hunter is aiming his gun at a bird who is at the very right edge of the image.

Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
